History

Alef Bet Montessori opened with 8 students on Sept. 5, 2005 and grew to 13 students by the end of the academic year . The following year our school expanded into two classes totaling 29 students (almost tripling in one year). For the 2007-2008 academic year, our third year, we had two main programs: the Primary Program serving children ages 3-6, and the Toddler Program for children ages 18 months to 3 years old. For the 2008-2009 academic year we added a second primary class. Year by year our school continues to grow and expand. We plan to opened an Elementary Program in September 2012 serving grades 1-6.  To find our more about the Elementary Program, go to Program Description.

Although the number of Jewish nursery schools and childcare programs in the Rockville, Bethesda area is plentiful, it is rare to find a Jewish school or preschool that uses the Montessori method of teaching. It is the only school to hold an AMI accreditation. Alef Bet offers a traditional Montessori environment within an atmosphere of Jewish learning and experience. We are located at the Aish DC Center for Jewish Learning. Our premises include an outdoor playground, an indoor playroom, a toddler classroom, two primary classrooms and a Hebrew classroom.

Alef Bet Montessori is also part of the Jewish Montessori movement in North America. Jewish Montessori schools have been in existence in North America for several years with the largest ones located in New Jersey and Toronto. The Jewish Montessori community meets in New Jersey once a year to exchange ideas and support. Jewish Montessori Schools in the Washington Metro area are expanding. Currently Alef Bet Montessori serves the Potomac, Rockville and Bethesda area and Kemp Mill Montessori serves the Silver Spring and Wheaton area.
