Judaics Weekly Bulletin 11/20/09

We are continuing to learn Chanukah songs- you may have heard some of them at home!
In the Parsha we learned about Yitchak and Rivka - they had twin sons, who were very different. Yaakov had smooth skin, and loved to learn the Torah and do Mitzvot. Esav was reddish and hairy and loved to hunt and kill animals and people. Esav was once very hungry. He came to Yaakov and traded his being first-born for a bowl of lentil soup. When it came time to receive the bracha (blessing) of the first born, their father Yitchak asked Esav to prepare him a nice meal, after which he would give him the bracha. Rivka heard this, and arranged for Yaakov to go to Yitchak, pretend to be Esav, give Yitchak a meal, and receive the bracha instead. He did, which of course made Esav very angry! The children were so intrigued with the story it was hard for them to stop "in the middle" and not hear what happened between Yaakov and Esav!

Morah Miriam

Morah Adi brought in some very nice Hebrew books that the children have enjoyed. We have continued enjoying our lessons and creating friendships. We have started to speak about Thanksgiving, as well, and the idea of being thankful both to G-d and to those in our lives who help us and give to us, and for our friends and family, etc. - hakarat hatov!

The children have been enjoying the pleasant weather outdoors. There has been a lot of interest in Continents of the world - looking at them on the globe , building a map, and for some children looking and discussing pictures of daily life in those faraway places. The little ones who have just been introduced to our globe love to contribute and point our where land and water is. In addition we have been reading a book The Hole in the Dyke. It is a charming story set in Europe (Holland), complete with windmills, and dikes, and a brave boy named Peter.

The Toddlers have been having a great time in school the past weeks. They are learning to make the challah dough and crushing grapes to make the kiddush and also learning songs for Hanukkah. They decorated dreidels for their art projects.

For language they are learning the names of farm animals and insects. Circle time is fun as they are singing lots of new songs with so many actions in them that they get so excited when they hear the song. They love "Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes." We start the song slowly and we gradually increase the speed and don't they get confused with their heads, shoulders, knees, and toes.

We have already begun our Chanukah preparations! We have begun making decorations to hang on the walls, we have learned about the Chanukiah, dreidels (sevivonot), latkes( levivot), and we have sung several songs in preparation for our sing-along with our families on Chanukah.  We will learn about the story of Chanukah next week or the following week.
We learned about the Parsha as well.  We learned that Avraham sent his servant Eliezer to find a wife for Yitchak. He wanted a very special woman, one with whom Yitchak could work to spread the word of the Oneness of Hashem, and Torah.  What trait did he look for? Kindness. He ask Hashem to let him know which woman would be the correct woman, by showing him a woman who would give both him and his 10 camels drink. We took the opportunity to speak about how camels store up water and then walk for long distances without needing water, and how they walk in a line called a sha-ara. So, Eliezer found a very special girl- Rivka, who did in fact marry Yitzchak.

We have been speaking about the changing seasons in our class, and have done some leaf-rubbings. We have spoken about the change in climate, and the need to wear warmer clothes.  And we have begun to make a season book, which you will see after we have colored our summer tree!  We also read some very cute books in Hebrew which Morah Adi brought in, and we read a book about bees, as well.

This Friday will be Skye's birthday- happy birthday Skye!

Have a great week.

There has been a lot of interest in sounding out words, the children enjoy coming up with words that begin with particular sounds - even while they are busy with their own activity or just walking past a friend who is working with sounds. Anyone working with sounds is sure to get showered with words!

They have been learning some songs for Channuka, and you will see the gleeful look on their faces when they perform the actions at the Channuka party.

We ask that our boys bring in one Kippah  for themselves which they will decorate and leave in class.

Shabbat Shalom,

Circle time is an important part of the morning in the toddler class. This short 10 to sometimes 15 minutes of the mornings is the time so much information is absorbed by the toddlers.  We sing songs we read a story and we also do the rituals of the prayers.  The singing and the reading aloud plays an important part in the development of the toddlers language skills.  When we sing songs like "If your happy and you know it clap your hands" or "Old Mc Donald had a farm," we are not only learning the songs but at the same time we are opening up the toddlers minds indirectly to learn about sequences.  Sequence is a form of order and order is an important part in every day life.

Reading aloud helps the toddlers language development and effective read alouds supports this development. Reading books that play with sounds is an important part in helping the toddlers to be aware of the different units of sounds in speech.

So this is to all the toddler parents - spend some time reading aloud with the little ones and see how much you all enjoy it.

Judaics Weekly Bulletin 11/6/09

We learned the mitzvah of hachnasat orchim (inviting guests) this week, as Avraham loved to do that mitzvah.  He had a special tent, with doors on all 4 sides. This was so that, no matter which side people passed, he would see them, and invite them in.  Even when he wasn't feeling well, and Hashem made it very hot outside so that there would be no passersby, Avraham was still wishing for guests. So, Hashem sent 3 melachim (angels) appearing as men, to visit him.  They ate with Avraham, and then informed him that he and his wife Sarah would have a baby next year- no small feat, as they were 99 and 89 at the time- but they did, and his name was Yitchak.

We have set up a parsha box in each class, with props for each week's parsha - this week has Avraham, Sara, Yitzchak, and 3 Melachim, and a tent with 4 doors- come on in to take a peak at it! The children really enjoy using it.

Shabbat Shalom,
Morah Miriam

We have been enjoying the dry weather, and enjoying our outdoor play.  We really enjoyed reading a Curious George book that Estie brought in, about Curious George at the train station. The Curious George books are familiar to many of the children- if you haven't read them to your children, you might want to try one out - they are very cute books.  Many of the children have been learning sandpaper letters, others have moved ahead in math, and all have learned to wash dishes or tables or clothes or hands..the room is abuzz with the sounds of learning.

D'vash Weekly Bulletin 11/6/09

We baked bread pudding for snack this week. Some children worked with shapes, finding  a match for shapes in the objects around the classroom. Others have been forming words with the movable alphabet. We read a story about "Uncle David", who is a very big man and lives in a giant house , and sleeps in a giant bed.
Please send an apple note or two in,every week, so we can read them out during our Shabbat party!
