TODDLER PROGRAM – 18 – 30 MONTHS
Toddlers between the ages of 18 and 30 months can start the Alef Bet Montessori Toddler Program. Toddlers can attend half-day (9 a.m. to noon), Lunch Bunch (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) or a full-day (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) program, 2, 3 or 5 days a week. The classroom is composed of up to 12 students with one teacher, one assistant and a Hebrew teacher. The required ratio for 18-month-olds is 3-1; for children over 2, the ratio is 6-1.
This special space is their own peaceful classroom, where they play a meaningful role in their own care and the care of their classroom environment. Together they form a community for the purpose of supporting the children in becoming independent and engaged learners.
The classroom is carefully prepared to meet the unique needs of this age. All furniture is of a size to allow maximum independence, and the toddler materials are designed to be attractive and inviting to the children.
Social interactions with other children, development of language skills, care of oneself and the environment, food preparation, music and movement activities are integral to the Montessori toddler experience.
Every day is exciting and new to a toddler in our classroom. The teacher is always looking out for the “sensitive periods” when the child demonstrates an almost obsessive interest in a particular activity that is essential to his or her growth. Children may choose to water the plants, help prepare a snack, paint a picture, or any “work” from an array of activities offered in the classroom. An engaged child, who makes an independent choice, can develop concentration skills and self-confidence.
Alef Bet Montessori strongly supports an open, supportive relationship between teachers and parents. Daily communication, formal conferences and parent education classes contribute to an atmosphere in which each child can realize his or her full potential.
